PRINT(Beijing) – The national auditor has found that a three-year program to refurbish or rebuild school buildings has left many untouched.
Months after the 2008 earthquake, the State Council ordered the three-year, nationwide program to address problems related to shoddily built schools. The program ended in April.
The National Audit Office examined 18 provinces that were part of the program and found that 269 million square meters of school building slated for renovation or new construction remained untouched. The figure represents 47 percent of the State Council's plan for the provinces.
Officials still plan to rebuild and refurbish the schools that the program did not get to.
Of the 261 million square meters that have seen actual work, about 20 percent failed to meet the three-year deadline.
The office released its report on June 27.
