Donald Trump has declared that Chinese efforts to help deal with Pyongyang have failed, in a warning that comes one day before US and Chinese officials are to meet in Washington to discuss security issues that include North Korea.
“While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried!” Mr Trump tweeted.
White House officials, who were caught off guard by the tweet, could not clarify if Mr Trump was referring to the case of Otto Warmbier — an American student who died on Monday after being released from North Korea in a coma — or the push to get Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear programme.
