China Mobile Ltd.'s first-half net profit rose a pedestrian 1.5% due to rising costs and intense competition to corner the market for China's most profitable, high-end users.
 
The world's largest mobile carrier by subscribers is racing with China Telecom Corp. and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. to boost revenue per user by adding users of 3G mobile services, which offer faster data speeds at a higher price than second-generation services.
