Xi, Trump Discusses Ties, Korean Peninsula on Phone

Apr 24 , 2017

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump on Monday discussed bilateral ties and the situation on the Korean Peninsula on phone, pledging close contact through various means to promptly exchange views on major issues of common concern.

China strongly opposes actions that violate resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, Xi said, adding China hopes that the parties concerned will exercise restraint and avoid actions that aggravate tensions on the Peninsula.

Xi noted that if the parties shoulder their due responsibilities and meet each other halfway, they can solve the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhike, Reuters reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all sides to exercise restraint on Monday in a call about North Korea with U.S. President Donald Trump, as Japan conducted joint drills with a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group headed for Korean waters.

The carrier group was sent by Trump for exercises in waters off the Korean peninsula as a warning, amid growing fears North Korea could conduct another nuclear test soon in defiance of United Nations sanctions, according to Reuters.
