  • The Hill reports: "President Trump on Monday slammed China's trade practices as "stupid" rather than free and fair. "When a car is sent to the United States from China, there is a Tariff to be paid of 2 1/2%. When a car is sent to China from the United States, there is a Tariff to be paid of 25%," the president wrote on Twitter. "Does that sound like free or fair trade. No, it sounds like STUPID TRADE - going on for years!" Washington and Beijing have exchanged tariff threats in recent weeks... The back and forth has caused concerns over a possible trade war — fears Trump has rejected."
  • CNBC reports: "Chinese President Xi Jinping has an opportunity this week to announce significant reforms that could de-escalate trade tensions with the world's largest economy. The leader is due to deliver a speech at the Boao Forum for Asia, an annual summit that's been dubbed the "Asian Davos," on Tuesday and global markets will be watching for remarks on the Beijing's tit-for-tat tariff war with Washington. It's hoped Xi will say something "specific enough and tangible enough to give us confidence that the market access reforms that have been on the table for some time are being pushed," said Myron Brilliant, executive vice president and head of international affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce."
  • Financial Times reports: "Chinese business leaders and government academics aimed to de-escalate trade war tension on Monday, in advance of a speech by president Xi Jinping in which he was expected to announce new market-opening measures to address US concerns. China has sought to play the role of responsible guardian of the global trading system in response to tariffs from US president Donald Trump and the threat of even harsher sanctions to come... On Friday, a Chinese commerce ministry spokesman repeated Beijing's stance that 'China doesn't want a trade war, but we're not afraid to fight a trade war.'"
