  • CNBC reports, "Using trade deals with Canada, Mexico and South Korea as leverage, Washington looks set to sharpen its hard line trade policy against China and what it deems unfair trade practices from Beijing, strategists told CNBC. Though some experts have said a tariff-impacted slowdown in Chinese economic activity may make Beijing more willing to agree to a deal, many still maintain China won't back down and will respond to further U.S. escalation by raising regulatory obstacles to U.S. businesses operating in the mainland."
  • Newsweek reports, "President Donald Trump was lobbied by immigration senior adviser Stephen Miller to stop issuing visas to Chinese students seeking to study in the United States, according to to a report by the Financial Times. Miller was responsible for the Trump administration's hardline immigration policy, whose focus has been reducing immigration to the U.S. Miller was behind the administration's "zero tolerance" policy, which included prosecuting undocumented migrants picked up at the border, and resulted in the separation of children from their parents."
  • TIME reports, "Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday that he doesn't see the U.S. relationship with China worsening after a series of setbacks that officials said include canceling the Pentagon chief's planned visit to Beijing this month. Mattis said the U.S. has to learn how to manage its relationship with the communist nation."
