Focus This Week
A community space to discuss the China-U.S. relationship and beyond.

Dear Focus Reader,

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited New Delhi this week for a two-day trip aimed at restoring momentum in China-India relations. The visit marked only the second high-level meeting between the two countries since deadly border clashes in 2020, and is expected to set the stage for Prime Minister Modi's upcoming trip to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

During the talks, Wang said China and India should view each other as "partners rather than adversaries or threats" and added, "The setbacks we experienced in the past few years were not in the interest of the people of our two countries. We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored in the borders."

The talks covered trade, border management, and cultural exchanges. Both sides agreed to resume direct flights, reopen key border trade routes, and expand cooperation on river data. Negotiations also advanced on reducing troop deployments along the disputed Himalayan frontier.

The visit comes as India faces rising tensions with the United States. Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, bringing total duties to 50%, in response to Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil and weapons. White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro criticized India for "cosying up to both Russia and China."

Beijing has expressed opposition to Washington's measures. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong called the U.S. a "bully" and said China would "firmly stand with India" in defending the multilateral trading system. Xu also described India and China as "double engines" of economic growth in Asia and invited more Indian investment in China.

"Considering the tensions between the U.S. and Russia over the past five years, such remarks should not just be seen as simple diplomatic rhetoric. Actual improvement of the bilateral relationship should be conducive to ending the war."
