White House denies change in North Korea policy

The White House has denied that US policy towards North Korea has changed after Rex Tillerson, secretary of state, on Tuesday suggested that Washington was ready to talk to Pyongyang “without preconditions” in what appeared to be a new overture.

The White House National Security Council said that US policy “has not changed” and that the Trump administration remained “open to the possibility of dialogue” with North Korea towards the aim of removing nuclear weapons from the Korean peninsula.

“As the secretary of state has said, this must include — but is not limited to — no further nuclear or missile tests,” said a National Security Council spokesperson. “Given North Korea’s most recent missile test, clearly now is not the time.
