China, Japan Open Hotline to Prevent Military Clash

Jun 08 , 2018

Japan and China have launched a new contact mechanism to prevent an accidental clash between warships or fighter jets in the latest sign of warming relations between the two fierce east Asian rivals.

The new mechanism took 10 years of negotiations and came into effect 30 days after Chinese premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Japan.

Its creation shows how China and Japan hope to manage their territorial dispute over the Senkaku or Diaoyu islands, as well as the momentum towards better relations brought by US President Donald Trump’s disruptive diplomacy in Asia.
