Chinese Defense Minister Accuses U.S. of Destabilizing Asia

Jun 02 , 2019

China’s defense minister portrayed the U.S. as a destabilizing force in the world, and Beijing as a source of peace and prosperity, as he pushed back strongly against recent U.S. criticism of China’s increasingly assertive role in global affairs.

In a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, Gen. Wei Fenghe said that China wasn’t trying to displace the U.S. as the world’s pre-eminent power, wouldn’t use its growing might to dominate other nations, and was committed to improving military ties with Washington.

“The two sides recognize that military conflicts, or even a war between them, would bring disasters to both countries and the world,” he said.
