Pompeo Issues Warning to China, Russia on Arctic

May 07, 2019

The U.S. warned against encroachment in the Arctic by China and Russia, calling on nations with Arctic territory to guard against aggressive claims and actions in an area that has attracted global competition.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that all countries that have Arctic territory and make up the eight-nation Arctic Council—Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the U.S.—should benefit from the area’s resources, as well as other countries.

However, he said in a speech at a meeting here of the council: “All parties in the marketplace have to play by the rules. Those who violate those rules should lose their rights to participate in the marketplace.”
