Focus This Week
A community space to discuss the China-U.S. relationship and beyond.

This week, we mourn the passing of the Honorable Tung Chee Hwa, founder and Chairman Emeritus of the China-United States Exchange Foundation. Mr. Tung was Hong Kong's first Chief Executive and devoted his life to service: to his city, his country, and the cause of global peace. His deep love for Hong Kong and its people informed his work throughout his life, including his role in guiding the city through a historic transition and in the implementation and development of "One Country, Two Systems."

Mr. Tung was guided by the conviction that lasting peace must be actively built through dialogue, mutual respect, and the willingness to keep people in conversation, particularly in times of difference. In that spirit, he founded CUSEF in 2008, believing that a strong China-U.S. relationship is essential to peace and prosperity around the world. Through CUSEF, he brought people together, fostered dialogue, and preserved space for exchange across generations, sectors, and borders.

That includes launching China-US Focus, a CUSEF initiative to promote digital dialogue, insight, and perspectives on the world's most important bilateral relationship. As China-US Focus moves forward, we will continue our responsibility to create space for serious exchange, different perspectives, and a clearer understanding of the choices facing both countries.

To learn more about Mr. Tung's life, legacy, and enduring commitment to a constructive China-U.S. relationship, CUSEF has established a lasting tribute, featuring an archival video interview, a statement from the CUSEF Board of Governors, and a speech by CUSEF Vice Chairman Andy Tung. The page will soon also include more than 50 tributes from friends, colleagues and world leaders who knew and worked with Mr. Tung, to preserve their memories and to document the values and vision that guided his life's work.

Quote of the Week
"For China and the United States, the ultimate measure of strategic success is not victory or defeat. The real test for both countries is whether they can prove that humanity is capable of breaking free from the cycle of history and forging a new path for human civilization."
